sunday

I've only had one pomegranate in my life. N. & I were tempted something awful at the Getty to pluck off two round bulbs and crack open the redness in the garden. The inclusion of the word "ancient" on the placard did little to deter us. Security, on the other hand!

  1. I read an amazing book while home this Christmas called Pomegranate Roads, about a Soviet botanist who devoted much of his life to trekking through the wilds of Turkmenistan studying, cataloging, and building the world's largest collection of wild pomemgranate specimens (1,117 to be exact!) Most of his work was destroyed when the Soviet Union broke up, but his memoirs are pretty incredible!

  5. Oh! I didn't know they grew to be such large trees. The one I wrote about from little-girl-memory was almost as 4 feet tall. It was a shrub--a baby tree. We know how deceptive memory can be.

My grandmother shared it's first yield with me. Thought I was eating rubies! I eat as many pomegranates as I can stand. :) Now I want a tree. Thanks for sharing. I thought they were pears or apples at first glance.

  8. To this day, I can't get over the fact that pomegranates grow on trees. Nature is insane (and in this case, wonderful).

If I had a tree near me, I'd certainly be extremely tempted to pick one and eat it.
